Elwyn Hughes Love Spoons are a family run business based in Conwy, North Wales and have been producing hand made traditional Welsh love spoons since 1975.

We are pleased to be able to offer a range of designs in native timbers, to see the full range pop in to our shop here at Erwood Station Craft Centre.

Love spoons are a Welsh tradition dating back to before the seventeenth century, the earliest known example is from 1667 although it is believed the origins pre-date this by some time.

Love spoons were given to young women by their suitors and the earliest spoons were very simple and still used as a practical item, over time the carvings became more ornate and the spoons eventually became collectable decorative items. Certain symbols came to have specific meanings: a horseshoe for luck, a cross for faith, bells for marriage, hearts for love, a wheel supporting a loved one and a lock for security, among others.

Today love spoons are given as wedding and anniversary presents, as well as birthday, Christmas or Valentines Day gifts.
